Do’s of exam preparation!

  • Prepare for the exam by gathering supplies (water, watch, earplugs, pens, etc.) or making sure that your computer is working properly.
  • Create a study schedule — and stick to it.
  • Try alternative study techniques, including making flashcards or creating flowcharts. This might sound kiddish to some but it actually works!
  • Make a spark sheet or checklist and use it to help memorize key terms and definitions.
  • Memorize key definitions and elements of laws and concepts especially technical subjects like sciences, law and economics.
  • Nowadays, ample material is available on internet for free. You can find text and even audio visual material on any subject from engineering to psychology. Just search on google and youtube!
  • Research your professor’s style of exams.  Find out what types of exams and questions he or she is likely to ask.  Remember all of the suggestions a professor makes about answering his or her exam questions.
  • Check your outline for completeness and accuracy by comparing it to the professor’s syllabus, or other people’s outlines.
  • Incorporate the professor’s focus and style into your studying.  If the professor emphasized particular concepts, counter-arguments or policies in class, you should be prepared to incorporate those ideas into your exam answers.
  • Take as many practice exams as you can under exam-like conditions. Compare your answers with model answers or with your friends’ answers.
  • If your professor offers to read your answer to a practice question, take advantage of it! This type of feedback is the best way to find out whether your answer is on the mark and matches the professor’s expectations.
  • In case of university/board exams always buy a 10year question papers book. It helps you to get a sense of pattern and kind of questions. Sometimes even 40% or more questions are repeated from past years papers, especially in university exams
  • If you feel that you take time to grasp or memorize, start making notes! Yes it can be done on the last day before exam. Just write the headings and points while you read through the books. After you are done with reading, read your notes. If you remember the headings, it is not that difficult to explain it.
  • But for technical terms you should write the whole definition and learn.
  • Study each subject in small increments over a period of many days. Studying last day before exam is never a good idea. You may pass but never with your best score, also, it is stressful!
  • Get enough food, sleep, and exercise while you are studying. This is really important. If you don’t take care of your body, it reduces your concentration and efficiency during the exam!
  • If you feel good by praying before exam, go for it. If you need a body stretch, do it! Don’t be embarrassed. You should be comfortable and confident while taking the exam!
